Brave browser review https://web.emhmki.org/reviews/web_browsers/review_brave.html Mon, 11 Jul 2022 10:30:00 CST Of late, I’ve been dabbling some with the Chromium based browser Brave. My history with web browsers has primarily existed within the sphere of Mozilla and NetScape, and some with the old Internet Explorer. I've managed to avoid Chromium based browsers as a primary web platform until now.

Sunbeam mobile phone review https://web.emhmki.org/reviews/phones/review_sunbeam_phone.html Wed, 6 Apr 2022 19:50:00 CST I’ve been using the Sunbeam Orchid phone for a few weeks now. It works well enough, and is pretty much what you would expect from a basic call / text only phone, however I do have a few critiques.

I've written a review of the phone, so click here to read more.

Adding search capability to a website with Xapian Omega for Apache web-servers on Debian https://web.emhmki.org/guides/web_hosting/guide_xapian_omega_search_engine.html Mon, 14 Feb 2022 21:35:00 CST Over a period of time in running a web-site, it’s common to accumulate a number of blogs, guides, and miscellaneous materials that can build up to such an amount that the accessibility of those past articles can become lost to the readers as it is buried away.

In this guide we’re going to setup the Xapian Omega search engine CGI application for a simple static web-site for an Apache web-server.

Moved site to new server plus new updates Mon, 14 Feb 2022 21:29:00 CST I’ve moved the emhmki.org site to a new web server. The previous web server was running off of a CentOS VM, which I’ve now since moved back home to Debian thanks to Red Hat’s shenanigans. The new site requires HTTPS connections now, and all previous links will be redirected to “web.emhmki.org.” If you notice any problems come up, then let me know.

Along with this migration, I’ve included a few other features that I’ve been testing. One of those is an IRC web client. You can check it out now at https://web.emhmki.org:8443/. Currently this is running on a self-hosted Kiwi web client; I might change it to a different web client in the future, but this should reduce the barrier to entry. (Note: I will be restricting networks such as TOR in the future to prevent abuse.)

Additionally, I am trial running a web ring. For now I’ve named it Portcullis. You can check it out at https://web.emhmki.org/portcullis/index/. It isn’t yet completed, but if you’re interested in adding your site to the index, then send me an email at the contact form. I will be working out some minor rules later, but keep in mind that I’m only permitting PG rated Christian friendly sites.

You may have also noticed a search function now included into both the web site and Portcullis. Each search is restricted to the individual sites to prevent any cross-over of my blogs showing up as a result in a web ring search, and vice versa.

ZNC bouncer service (friends only) Tue, 24 Aug 2021 22:54:00 CST If you are a friend of mine and would like access to a ZNC bouncer for IRC message logging, you can use mine if you would like!

However do note that ZNC message logs are kept on my servers and are also observable to the hosting provider Digital Ocean. I also retain logs in the possible event of a legal situation, so please do not abuse this service!

The up-time is generally well, but I do reboot the server once every two months (actually this is automated based on Let’s Encrypt certificate renewals.) This can interfere with your personal ZNC IRC buffer by clearing it out.

If you would like, I can create an account for you and will email to you the credentials.

Pale Moon browser review http://emhmki.org/reviews/web_browsers/review_palemoon.html Fri, 9 Jul 2021 13:15:00 CST I've been using the Pale Moon web browser since 2013. My original reasoning then was mostly superficial. I wasn’t fond of the Firefox version 29 release, which introduced a re-design of the interface known as "Australis." I sought out for an alternative, which at that time there were many. Some would include minor modifications to set themselves apart from the rest, but eventually I would settle on Pale Moon for the next 8 years.

Let’s take a look at some of the things that sets Pale Moon apart.

New guides added for emhmki.org! http://emhmki.org/ Tue, 5 Jan 2021 11:23:00 CST Hello all!

While many of us have been sitting back and drinking eggnog, celebrating the new year, and sending 2020 on its way, I’ve been spending much of my holiday working on the site along with a few accompanying guides.

You can check them out at http://emhmki.org/guides/. See XFCE and Secure Shell daemon hyperlinks. (You may have to refresh the web page to update your browser cache.)

Since the site is static, this requires some clever thinking in how to approach and organize the layout so that navigation and accessibility are readily apparent upon first glance. Let me know what you think!

It shouldn’t be too much longer and it will be ready to go! Then soon after the IRC server will be made available

Thank-you
